Dial-up Connection & E-mail Settings

How Can I Access My E-mail?

Webmail
The easiest way to access your e-mail is through Webmail. Webmail is accessible from anywhere, all you need is access to the internet and a browser, like Firefox or Mozilla. It is encrypted and safe so your security is assured. Your Webmail does not require any software to be installed or configured on your desktop workstation, so it is the simplest way to get started. To access your e-mail click on the "Email" link on the left side of your screen (on the left under Community), where you will be prompted for your username and password. We suggest that everyone try the Webmail first and then try other mail clients if they don't like it.

Mail Clients
Some users enjoy using a mail client application that supports POP (Post Office Protocol). There are many compatible applications available: Thunderbird, MS Outlook, Eudora etc. and the details of installing and configuring each application are listed under E-mail Client Settings. If you choose this e-mail access method, you will need to know a few basic settings before you start.

Incoming Settings

  • The username, your full Paonia.com email address (e.g., johndoe@paonia.com), and password provided to you.
  • Server is a POP server.
  • Paonia.com's incoming POP server mail.paonia.com.
  • Port 110 for POP.
  • Port 995 for POP with SSL encryption (recommended).

Outgoing Settings

  • The username, your full Paonia.com email address (e.g., johndoe@paonia.com), and password provided to you.
  • Paonia.com's outgoing SMTP server mail.paonia.com.
  • Outgoing SMTP requires Authentication.
  • Port 587 with TLS authentication.
  • Port 465 with SSL authentication.

If you prefer to use a mail client we strongly recommend Thunderbird over other clients for both performance and security reasons. It is free and community developed by the Mozilla group. See the Mozilla® Thunderbird homepage to download Thunderbird.

Anti-Spam Features
Paonia.com uses several layers of Anti-Spam tools to combat spam.

Here's how:

  • Our mail system forces other mail servers to comply with the Internet Engineering Task Force recommendations for mail servers by rejecting mail from improperly configured mail servers.
  • Our mail system honors the Sender Policy Framework (SPF), and Paonia.com publishes SPF records for the paonia.com domain.
  • Then, our mail system checks your Webmail address book and will whitelist (allow) any email addresses in your address book to be delivered without additional checks.
  • Next, the mail system checks the Spamhaus blacklist system for both the mail server the email is coming from and the website links in the body of the email and rejects known spammer emails.
  • Then, the mail system performs a check on the "From:" header in the email message. If the from address is on the paonia.com domain, we verify that it was received directly from a paonia.com email server (the only servers allowed to relay paonia.com email).
  • By this point, more than 50% of spam has been stopped and rejected.
  • Finally, we provide the optional DSPAM system as a completely user customizable, trainable system to learn the mail that you want to receive. This system should provide accuracy between 95%-99%. See the training instructions below to learn how to opt-in to this system and use it for best results.

Paonia.com Spam Training
By default, the trainable Paonia.com spam filter is turned off for your account . To activate it, login to the Webmail application (as described above), go to "Spam/Virus Settings", uncheck the Spam Opt Out checkbox, and click "Save Options".

Paonia.com spam filters will automatically put messages believed to be Spam into your Webmail "SPAM" folder. The filter is very intelligent but needs training feedback from you to learn about your email. Messages in your SPAM or Trash folders are NOT included in disk space limits for your account.

Webmail Spam Training

(when you go to www.paonia.com and click on "email")

You should periodically open your "SPAM" folder and review the messages there to verify that messages you want have not been misidentified.

If messages have been misidentified as SPAM, select the messages by clicking the checkmark on the left side of the message and then click the "Messages to" select box in the upper right corner. Choose the "INBOX" folder and then click COPY.

Next, for the same message, select the messages by clicking the checkmark on the left side of the message and then click the "Messages to" select box in the upper right corner. Choose the "aaa-not-spam" folder and then click MOVE.

If some spam makes it to your inbox, select the messages by clicking the checkmark on the left side of the message and then click the "Messages to" select box in the upper right corner. Choose the "aaa-spam" folder and then click MOVE.

POP Client Spam Training Instructions

(Outlook, Thunderbird, Eudora, Etc.)

By default, the trainable Paonia.com spam filter is set to use Webmail for your account . To change it to use POP clients for training, login to the Webmail application once (as described above), go to "Spam/Virus Settings", change the dropdown box that is set to "Webmail" to "POP", and click "Save Options".

Paonia.com spam filters will automatically tag message subjects believed to be Spam with "*SPAM*". These messages will be delivered to your E-mail client instead of being filtered to the Webmail "SPAM" folder. You will likely want to create a spam folder and filter in your POP client so that messages with these tagged subject lines will be filtered out of your INBOX. We have provided instructions to do this for the most common e-mail clients here.

The filter is very intelligent but needs occasional training feedback from you to learn about your email.

If messages have been misidentified as SPAM, forward the email to notspam@spamtrainer.paonia.com.

If some spam makes it to your inbox untagged, forward the email to spam@spamtrainer.paonia.com.

Mixed Client Spam Filter Training Instructions

This is an advanced mode where you use a POP client and Webmail. You check your SPAM folder in the webmail and train the filter either with the webmail folders and/or by forwarding from your pop client.

Other Anti-Spam Systems
Many POP e-mail clients have their own built-in anti-spam features. Thunderbird, Eudora, and other e-mail applications have anti-spam systems. We typically recommend that you use one final filtering mechanism whether it be one of these integrated e-mail client features or the Paonia.com DSPAM system. Otherwise, you may become confused about what system is marking messages as spam.

E-mail Client Settings

Outgoing E-mail Relaying

Internet Service Providers (ISPs) create restrictions on who can send e-mail through their servers as a part of their system security and SPAM controls. Frequently, they only allow you to send e-mail through their systems when you are connected through their network. Paonia.com has enabled features that will allow you to relay your outgoing e-mail through our systems whether you connect through our network or someone else's network.

We will describe how to set this up in some of the most common e-mail software packages. The setup varies slightly with each software application. Although they may call it something slightly different, you generally need to know the same pieces of information. You will need to know the server name, the server port, your e-mail address at Paonia.com, and your password.

Mail Maintenance

Mail Maintenance - Reducing Disk Storage

I. If you use a mail client (like Outlook Express, Thunderbird, Eudora) and you still seem to have a lot of mail being stored on our servers you probably need to make sure that your client is set to erase your mail off of our servers after it downloads mail off of the servers when you go to your inbox. That is the default setting. To make sure in Outlook Express:
1. Click on “Tools”
2.Click on “Internet Accounts”
3.Choose “mail.paonia.com” and click on “Properties”
4.Click on “Advanced”
5.If there is a checkmark in front of “Leave a copy of messages on server”, un-check it.

II. If you primarily use the Web Mail (https://webmail.paonia.com ), you are viewing your mail on our servers and it remains there unless you delete it occasionally (if it is mail you do not need to keep) or move it to your own machine (if you need to keep it). Here are instructions that will help you do either of these:

DELETE IT

If there is a lot of mail that you no longer need sitting in your inbox on the servers, the best thing to do is delete it.
1.Go to www.paonia.com
2.Click on Email
3.Fill in user name and password to get to your inbox
4.Click on “Options” (in the menu at the top)
5.Click on “Display Options” under “Other Options”
6.Increase the number in the box that determines “Messages per page in the mailbox view” to 100 so that you can delete many messages at once.
7.Click “Save Options”
8.Return to inbox, click on arrow beside the word “Select”
9.Click on “All”
10.Go through your mail and UN-check messages you would like to save
11.Click on “Delete” to erase the messages you have selected (they will have a checkmark in front of them)

12.Repeat steps 8-11 for your other folders by choosing "Open Folder" at the top right of your webmail screen.

MOVE IT

If you have mail sitting on the servers that you would like to keep, but you have reached your storage limits, you may want to move it to your own computer. The easiest way to do that would be to configure a mail client to download it. For configuration directions please see the E-mail Client Settings section above.

Speeding Up Your Internet With SlipStream®

What is the SlipStream® accelerator?
The SlipStream® accelerator speeds browsing by up to 7 times normal speeds. It does this by caching (storing) web pages and compressing images and text. This means it reduces the resolution of graphics to increase speed. The SlipStream® accelerator will place an icon in the lower right corner of your desktop from which you can set the properties and control the amount of compression ( and relative speed) desired.

We offer you this as an option. It will not increase the speed of your downloads, only your experience of web surfing. You can try it out and decide whether it works for you. It is the premier Browser Accelerator on the market - We hope you enjoy it!

Installing & Configuring SlipStream®

In order to install SlipStream® you will first need to download the installer from our website. Click here to download the Windows® installer. And click here to download the Macintosh® installer. I suggest downloading the installer to your Desktop for ease of access. After downloading the installer you will want to close all other applications (you may want to read ahead or print out these instructions). Once all other windows are closed & you are ready to install SlipStream® find where you downloaded the installer and double click the installer to begin the installation.

  1. Once the installer starts click Next when you are asked if you want to continue with the Setup program.
  2. After reading the Agreement, check the "I acknowledge that I have read and accepted the terms of this license agreement."
  3. The Next button will become useable once the acknowledgement box is checked. Click Next.
  4. Click Next.
  5. When prompted, click Finish.
  6. SlipStream® requires the computer to be restarted in order to complete the installation, click Ok.

When you restart your computer, the first time that you connect to the internet you will be prompted by SlipStream® for your Username & Password. These are the same as your Dial-up Username (johndoe@paonia.com) and Password. After entering the information double check that the remember password box is checked and click Ok.
